Yep, I used to be a rock-botherer (geologist/ palaeontologist if you want the proper terms). And once a rock-botherer always a rock-botherer.

Makes sense I’m now a follower of Christ then.

So here’s how The Rock compares with a few other rocks. Read on to find God’s power, life and healing in Christ…

Volcanic power? “Pah, that’s nothing” says God

Volcanic bombs are masses of molten rock that form as a volcano explodes. It ejects viscous fragments of lava when it erupts and they normally cool into solid fragments before landing. (Although my favourites are cow pie bombs which splash to the ground before solidifying and look like bovine turd 😁)

These bombs can be thrown miles and the largest are up to 6 metres in diameter. Imagine the power involved in that! When Mt St Helens erupted in 1980 it released energy 1600 times greater than that of the Hiroshima atomic bomb.

But God trumps that.

He raised Jesus from the dead (1 Cor 6:14) with His power. And you can access this power whenever you need it when you walk with Him. Whoop!

Fossils? They’re ancient life. But Jesus gives life- eternal

Our planet is littered with the remains of ancient life – fossils. And they’re beautiful. From petrified plants to calcified crabs and amazing ammonites, you can find all sorts of treasures when you look in the right place.

✔ Did you know chalk is actually made of microscopic plankton that once swam in a tropical sea? They’re now compressed and solidified into the cliffs you can see at places like Dover or Beachy Head.

✔ The coal measures of Wales and Northern England contain the remains of forests with gigantic trees and shrubs (clubmosses, horsetails, ferns, pteridosperms, conifers etc) and whole ecosystems from the past.

And you can make marks with both – chalk on a blackboard, charcoal on paper… Words created from ancient life.

But we have The Word of life.

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God… In him was life, and that life was the light of men.” – Jn 1:1-4 (NIV)

Rocks? Some may mend you for a while, but Christ brings eternal health

Rocks can heal.

I don’t mean crystals have magic powers, but products from rocks are used in medicine.

Clay minerals like Kaolinite are used to manufacture pills. Others are used topically on the skin. Laodicea in the Bible (Rev 3: 14-22) was famous for it’s eye salve made from local ‘Phrygian Stone’ and oil.

If you’ve got a painful tooth, an amalgam filling containing mercury (from cinnabar) can help. If you’ve got an upset stomach, bismuth from igneous rocks can settle it. And calcium from rocks like limestone or chalk is an antacid.

But Jesus. What can he do?

Bring us eternal health (Rev 21:4), that’s what!

As our rock Christ is our firm foundation and He always looks after us:

“For in the day of trouble he will keep me safe in his dwelling; he will hide me in the shelter of his sacred tent and set me high upon a rock.”- Ps 27:5 (NIV) “

When we build our lives on Him we can withstand any storm (Matt 7:24-27).

God bless xx
