If you could have any superpower what would it be? Mine would definitely be flying. To be able to soar high above the world, away from all the mad happenings of life, to float and whizz through cotton wool clouds, to dance high with the stars and shoot across the sky like a meteor. What a feeling!

So what have all these thoughts of flying made me think about? Skiing!

Now I know skiing’s not really flying but, trust me, at times it feels very close…

  • Sometimes you speed straight down the slopes crouching low, moving fast as a bullet
  • Other times you swoosh and swish from side to side, one turn after another, constantly changing direction as you head down the slope
  • And then there’s ‘the wall’ – that sudden steep drop in the middle of a gentle run, where you plunge downward at breakneck speed trying to resist the knee-buckling forces
And you know, life is a bit like skiing. Especially now silly season (aka the Christmas run-up) is upon us.

It can feel like you’re hurtling out of control, rushing from one thing to another, changing direction every five minutes. And sometimes plunging so fast towards the edge of the piste, down… down… can’t stop… waaaaaaaah… splat!

Now, these different ways of skiing can be thrilling for a short while. I’ve enjoyed them all. But there are times when it’s glorious to slow down. To glide serenely through quiet forests watching snow gently settle as you pass. Dreaming of warm apple strudel awaiting below.

The mad adrenalin-rush stylie is not sustainable for long and sometimes really hurts!

In life, I’m sure you’d like at least a little calm. That’s where Jesus can help…

  • After Daniel had a startling vision, he was terrified. But Jesus brought peace and strength to him (Dan 10:19) – try to take time to focus on Christ and you’ll be surprised what you can endure
  • When a fierce storm rocked the disciples in their tiny boat they cried out in fear. But Christ calmed the gale (Luke 8:22-25) – if you call to Him from  the midst of your chaos, He can still the waves for you
  • Shortly before his death, Jesus assured his disciples that he would leave them the gift of peace (John 14:27) – be assured, when you trust in Christ you can enjoy this peace too

Remember, Jesus is your superpower 😁

While things will likely continue at a pace this season, with Jesus you can fly through it all. You can glide down those ski slopes with a smile on your face knowing there’s a delicious treat at the end…

And now, as Christmas draws near:

“May the Lord of peace himself always give you his peace no matter what happens. The Lord be with you all.” – 2 Thess 3:16 (NLT)

God bless xx
