Jesus is coming tonight - nativity sceneWhat do you get when you cross a geologist with Christmas?

A comparison of the mineral cummingtonite with Jesus!

Well, Jesus is coming tonight and I couldn’t resist. So here are three facts about cummingtonite to remind you what Christ has done for us…

1. Cummingtonite is commonly found in metamorphic rocks

Specifically in amphibolite.

Metamorphic rocks are those that have changed from their original form (basalt in this case) into a different rock (amphibolite) because of great heat and pressure.

When Jesus came He completely transformed the world. In only three years of ministry He cured diseases (e.g. Matt 8:1-3), raised the dead to life (e.g. Luke 7:11-17), fed the hungry (e.g. Matt 14:13-21), brought joy and contentment to the people (e.g. Phil 4:11-13) and much more besides.

And He still does these things today. Just ask a Christian for their testimony and you’ll see…

2. Cummingtonite produces a white streak when you rub it across a dark surface

A bit like light penetrating the darkness.

Remind you of anyone?

When Jesus came He brought light to a world cowering in the darkness (e.g Jn 8:12, 1 Jn 1:5). He brought purity (e.g. Jn 17:17, Ps 86:11) and holiness (e.g.Is 6:3).

And if you know Christ, this light is in you. He will help you shine His brightness out to others so they can also know His goodness:

“You are the light of the world – like a city on a mountain, glowing in the night for all to see. Don’t hide your light under a basket! Instead, put it on a stand and let it shine for all. In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father.” – Matt 5: 14-16 (NLT)

3. Cummingtonite often forms radiating crystals

This Christmas Eve, as we remember Jesus’ first coming, when he was born as a tiny, squealing infant, let’s celebrate His glory. A glory that’s been radiating into the world ever since the original holy night.

God bless xx
