The moon really is beautiful.
On a clear night it sits in the sky surrounded by twinkling stars, sometimes huge and full, other times a crescent slicing through the darkness.
One Christmas Eve as I walked to midnight mass with a friend I looked up and there was the moon’s rounded face beaming at me with a halo shining through wispy clouds. It was like the angels were out proclaiming the Good News of Christ.
And then there was an early midsummer sunrise. As I watched the sun slowly appear above the horizon with red and orange streaks dancing across the sky, the moon remained aglow on the opposite side of the heavens. Truly glorious
But the moon isn’t just pretty. Oh no, it’s life giving too.
The moon…
1. Stabilises the rotation axis of planet Earth so our climate is also stable enough to let complex life exist
2. Regulates the tides causing life to proliferate on continental shorelines
3. Slowed down the Earth’s rotation many millions of years ago so we now have a 24 hour day – optimal for humans to flourish
And did you know, you can be like the moon?
While the sun physically produces light, the moon reflects it. Jesus (the Son) is the light of the world (Jn 12: 46) and you can reflect Him. When we know Jesus we become beautiful and life-giving, shining out true light into the world – the light that can only be found in Him.
God bless xx
